Permitting

As a candidate for Kitsap County Commissioner, I am committed to fostering a thriving local economy and making our community an even better place to live and work. One of the key areas I plan to address is the permitting process for small businesses and homeowners. By streamlining this process, we can reduce unnecessary delays, lower costs, and encourage growth and development in our county.

The Current Situation

In Kitsap County, the permitting process can be a significant hurdle for small businesses and homeowners. According to recent data, the average time to obtain a building permit is approximately 6-8 weeks. This timeline can be even longer for more complex projects. For many small business owners and homeowners, these delays can result in increased costs and lost opportunities.

A survey conducted by the Kitsap County Home Builders Association revealed that 60% of respondents experienced delays that impacted their project timelines and budgets. Similarly, small business owners report that the current permitting process can be a barrier to expansion and innovation. These challenges highlight the need for a more efficient system that supports our community's growth and prosperity.

Our Plan for Improvement

To address these issues, I propose the following initiatives to streamline the permitting process:

  1. Simplifying Regulations: We will review and revise existing regulations to eliminate unnecessary red tape. Simplified and clear guidelines will make it easier for applicants to understand requirements and prepare accurate submissions, reducing the likelihood of delays due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

  2. Expanding Pre-Application Consultations: Offering more opportunities for pre-application consultations will help applicants understand the requirements and potential challenges of their projects before they formally submit their permits. This proactive approach can help identify and resolve issues early, preventing delays later in the process.

  3. Improving Communication and Collaboration: Enhancing communication and collaboration between county departments, applicants, and stakeholders will ensure a more coordinated and efficient permitting process. Regular updates and feedback loops will help identify and address any bottlenecks promptly.

Expected Benefits

By implementing these initiatives, we anticipate several key benefits for Kitsap County:

  • Reduced Wait Times: Streamlining the permitting process will lead to shorter wait times for permit approvals, allowing projects to start sooner and stay on schedule.

  • Lower Costs: A more efficient system will reduce administrative costs for both the county and applicants, making it more affordable to undertake new projects.

  • Increased Economic Activity: Facilitating quicker and easier project approvals will encourage more small businesses to start and expand, boosting local economic activity and job creation.

  • Enhanced Community Development: Homeowners will find it easier to make improvements and additions to their properties, contributing to the overall development and enhancement of our neighborhoods.

Conclusion

Streamlining the permitting process for small businesses and homeowners is a crucial step towards fostering a vibrant and prosperous Kitsap County. As your County Commissioner, I will work tirelessly to implement these improvements, ensuring that our community can grow and thrive without unnecessary barriers. Together, we can build a future where innovation and development are encouraged, and every resident has the opportunity to succeed.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to serving you

as Kitsap County Commissioner.
